Drug-free therapies are effective and long-term solutions for many people who are coping with depression. There is help and hope for healing the pain and anguish, regardless of the history or duration of the illness. There may be a longer road to recovery for some, but recovery is definitely attainable.
Traditional talk therapy is one very effective path to healing, but for many it feels too long and painful, requiring many sessions of revisiting undesirable memories. Although it may make you uncomfortable to imagine embarking on such a journey, there are definitely healing benefits to be derived from traditional counseling.
Another very effective method of alleviating depression is through our many types of Energy Psychology, especially Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT. These techniques allow us to release vast amounts of undesirable thoughts about our past experiences and feelings, freeing us from the "heaviness" or burdensome feeling we've been carrying around for so long. The exciting thing about EFT is how it enables us to address and deal with these issues without having to actually re-live them or re-experience the pain. Just gently focusing on the memory for a short time is often sufficient to allow us to release a lifetime of pain. I'm not saying it's always a one-session-wonder, it's not (although sometimes such things do occur). The wonderful thing is that this method is bringing about the fastest relief and the most permanent results I've seen from any other emotional release method used in the counseling/coaching field today. These techniques are still considered experimental because of the lack of studies in Western medicine to date.
Another method I use for depression is to assess brain chemistry imbalances to the best of our ability and then offering a well-tested and effective plan for boosting any chemical deficiencies uncovered. Again, this is controversial and must be considered experimental because of the lack of validating studies in Western medicine, but the results have been excellent when conscientiously applied, there is nothing invasive or any potential for undesirable side effects, and, in fact it has many side benefits besides the benefit of restored chemical balance and improved emotional health.
Other drug-free therapies used by my clients include yoga, meditation, exercise, massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, light therapy, hypnotherapy, guided visualization, and more. Many are able to decrease or completely eliminate their need for medication in time. Drug free therapies work and more and more people are discovering this truth!
